Get your own custom Catrike Expedition Recumbent Trike When I decided to trick out an Expedition for my own personal use I decided to start with a custom color. Mainly, that was to ensure that I will keep the trike for a long time and not trade it away. I chose to match my motorcycle with a custom Harley copper color that is sure to be unique. This Expedition is also different than other Catrikes that you have seen because it is equipped with a 700/29er rear wheel and a lo-profile Durano Plus on the rear. This necessitated the use of our Wheel Extension Kit which also extended the wheelbase by about 2 inches. This trike handles like a dream and made it up to 63MPH on its inaugural ride down from the summit. The gear range is incredible, thanks in large part to the Schlumpf High Speed Drive. Wheel Extension Kit This project for me started out when I wanted to put a 29er on the back of my Expedition. Frankly, the tire was awesomely huge, but did not fit the look of my trike. Instead, I kept the wider 34mm Velocity Aero rim and fit the Schwalbe Durano Plus. Oh yeah, that's what I wanted. SRAM X.0 Rear Derailleur The SRAM X.0 derailleur features a carbon fiber cage and ultra crisp shifting. I'm using the SRAM 990 11-34T cassette with just a little bit of anodized red. Rear Wheel I went with a SRAM 506 hub and Velocity Aero P35 rim for the back of this beastie. Schlumpf High Speed Drive Anyone that has poked around the site knows that I am a huge fan of the Schlumpf High Speed Drive. With the 27T direct-drive mode I get awesome low gears for climbing. I spend about 90% of my time in the overdrive mode with the equivalent of a 68T chainring. Windwrap XT Fairing I love the fairings for their looks and the performance increase I get at high speed. This is the new flexmount setup. Rear Brake One thing I discovered when I was running the huge 29er tire was that I needed some extra braking power to stop the trike. Even though I went with the slightly smaller tire I left the brake on there for use as a parking brake. Pictured is the Avid BB7 and the Cleansweep rotor. Brake Levers On the left side I have the rear parking brake lever offset so Ican still use it as a drag brake. My main front brakes are the Avid Juicy 7s. Front Wheels/Tires Custom Velocity AeroHeats on the front with Schwalbe Duranos. Dirty Dog Rotors These rotors add just a little bit of bling to my trike. They match the skulls found on much of my Harley gear. Custom Idler Kit Of course I am running the TerraCycle Elite idlers and have completely eliminated all the chain tubing from my trike. You can also see the pinstriping here that matches my bike. Muscle Seat I recycled my muscle seat from the Feb 2009 promotion. It just looks fast. Shifter I just have one shifter, a SRAM X.0 on the right side. I prefer the twist grips which is the main reason I stick with SRAM. I can shift without ever having to move my hand off the grip. Rear Gearing The SRAM PG-990 is lightweight aluminum and runs very quiet. The anodized red spacers add a nice effect. Water Bottle Cage I went with the carbon fiber Origin8 water bottle cage mainly because I needed some anodized red to balance the front of the trike out. I've used these in the past and they work great on a boom. My Expedition took several months to make because I had to get it painted to match my Anniversary Edition Harley Ultra Classic. The copper color is dead on and the pin stripes are perfect. I am still debating on going with a black boom at some point.
Arkel Cargo Bags The Arkel bags fit perfectly and give me all the room I need for a change of clothes and lunch.
